Computer slang for input and output devices. An input device is any device used to feed data into a computer for processing. While receiving and reproducing information from a computer is the definition of an output device. 

As output devices, headphones receive data from computers (consider cellphones, laptops, tablets, and so on). 

The headphones must therefore be connected to a digital-to-analog converter for the computer’s output data to be reproduced on them.

Difference Between Input and Output Devices?

A device’s ability to do a specific task sets it apart from another. Data is taken in and sent to a processing device by input devices. The captured audio may be decoded and replicated by output devices.

Nowadays, as opposed to specialized technology, which concentrates on a certain activity, the majority of multipurpose devices, such as phones and laptops, include input and output capabilities.

Think about how information is “pumped out” by an output device by reproducing the processed information. An input device “in”s information, sends it to a processor, which then pumps it “out” to an output device.

While output devices can only reproduce that information, input devices are only intended to accept information, audio, and data. It won’t be able to output the data it gets if you have a special input device, like a recording microphone. 

That would necessitate using a new device. Only the audio that is received by a specific output device, such as premium speakers, will be output. However, some gadgets can send and receive input. These are usually referred to as “I/O” (input/output) devices in the industry.

The physical equipment acts as the input device. Data from an external source can be received by the hardware input device, processed, and transmitted to another device. 

This input is transformed into raw data by the core processor. Before an output device can interpret this data, it must be transmitted to an external processor.

Examples of Output Devices

Hardware elements that may generate information in a form that people can understand are referred to as “output devices.”

You can output in the form of text, pictures, or audio. It can replicate or show data in the same way as it did when it was first received from a source.

The most typical types of output devices include:

HeadphonesSimilar to speakers, headphones also take in audio data and turn it into sound. Your headphones’ speakers are unable to take in outside sound directly and send it to your computer. You’ll need to attach an input device, such as a microphone, to your headphones to do this.

Here, we see two distinct types of headphones, one without a microphone and the other with one (Headset).

Because they can only replicate audio from a mobile phone, laptop, or tablet, headphones without microphones are solely used as an output device. It is unable to transfer user data to a computer. 

On the other hand, input-output devices, such as headsets or headphones with an integrated microphone, can serve as both input and output devices.

For Google Assist and Apple Siri, voice commands through the mic serve as an example of the input function. Here, the mobile device can be instructed through the microphone, and sound is output through the headphones.

Input and Output of Headphones as Transducers

The use of headphones as energy transducers has already been mentioned. To do this, they convert the electrical energy present in analog audio impulses into sound waves (mechanical wave energy). In this way, audio signals are “input” into headphones, which then “output” sound. 

However, we can observe that they both input and output energy if we use the headphones as a point of comparison. In headphones, drivers are utilized to transform energy. These drivers typically use electromagnetic induction and are dynamic (moving coil).

A conductive coil attached to a moveable diaphragm allows the magnetic field around the electrical audio signal (an alternating current voltage) to pass through. The signal moves as it flows through the coil in response to the magnetic field because of electromagnetic induction.

The diaphragm moves as a result, emitting sound waves via the headphones. Stereo headphones use two separate signals. The left headphone driver receives a signal from the left channel, while the right headphone driver receives a signal from the right channel.
